Introduction to Module 1: Learning goals, units, assignment
Module 1, Perspectives on Learning and Instruction, provides an overview of three perspectives, which have been and still are very influential and relevant in both the educational research and practice. Exploring, understanding and comparing these perspectives helps you analyze learning processes and learning tasks. The three perspectives each have their own value. It is not a matter of who is right or wrong, but a matter of sharpening your perception and understanding of what is happening in a particular learning environment.
Learning goals of Module 1
After studying Module 1 you will be able to:
- Understand the principles of learning according to the behaviorist, cognitivist, and constructivist perspectives.
- Analyze a concrete learning event in terms of learning goals and learning processes according to the behaviorist, cognitivist, and constructivist perspectives.
- Understand four research methods to study processes of learning and instruction.
Although these are the goals we have envisioned for you (what we want you to learn), we strongly encourage you to set your own goals (at least 1 personal goal). Think about what YOU would like to know or better understand about different perspectives on learning and instruction. Remember that your goals need to be SMART, that is, Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound.
Program of Module 1
As explained before, after an introductory unit, Module 1 consists of three units on each of the learning perspectives. The fifth unit explains four research methods which are often used to study process of learning and instruction. Each of these units can be studied independently. The units are lectures in which sheet are presented and commented upon by the teacher. Watch the videoclip and make notes wherever you want.
