Introduction to Module 2
Welcome to Module 2, Learning and Transfer! This module provides an explanation and discussion of the way people learn and apply what they have learned in new situations (transfer). A fundamental distinction between two levels of learning, rote learning and understanding, is introduced. Processes of rote learning and understanding are discussed. Two types of transfer, at both levels are explained, low road and high road transfer.
Learning goals of Module 2
After studying Module 2:
- 1. You can distinguish between rote learning and understanding.
- 2. You can distinguish between two views on the role of experience in the process of understanding.
- 3. You understand the importance of activating prior knowledge in the process of learning.
- 4. You can distinguish between three stages in the process of acquiring cognitive skills.
- 5. You can distinguish between two types of transfer.
- 6. You can relate the two types of transfer to the processes of rote learning and understanding.
- 7. You understand the concept of conceptual change.
- 8. You can translate your understanding of learning and transfer into guidelines for fostering learning and transfer.
As in the previous module we strongly encourage you to set your own goals (at least 1 personal goal). Think about WHAT you would like to do with a better understanding of learning and transfer and HOW it can help you in your academic journey.
Program of Module 2
After an introductory unit, two levels of learning are described: rote learning and understanding. After that, the level of rote learning is further explored by zooming into activating prior knowledge and acquiring cognitive skills. By comparing low road transfer and high road transfer the focus of attention switches to understanding. Subsequently, the concept of conceptual change is introduced. Eventually, the findings discussed are translated into measures fostering learning and transfer. Watch the videoclips and make notes wherever you want.
