As we have previously learned, Flavell (1992) based the concept of metacognition on Piaget’s theory of cognitive development. At the final stage of cognitive development, called “formal operations”, children are capable of deductive reasoning. This requires metacognitive control. But, what about earlier stages? Can young children use metacognitive strategies? What do you think?
In the following video, you will learn about a study comparing the metacognitive skills of 6th grade children with university students. What were the results of the study? What were the results of the other studies presented in the video regarding cognitive support? What conclusions can we draw from these studies?
