Departing from the three perspectives on learning and instruction, behaviourism, cognitivism and constructivism, two kinds of instructional design models are introduced, focusing on structure and focusing on content. Various structure-oriented models are introduced: Component Display Theory, the 4C/ID model, Problem Based Learning and the Cognitive Apprenticeship Model. A separate category of instructional design model, those focusing on fostering self-regulated learning, is briefly introduced. Together, these models provide a set of tools with which designers can create learning environments which foster the development of cognitive and metacognitive facts, concepts, principles and strategies.

Learning goals of Module 5

After studying Module 5:

You can distinguish between structure-oriented and content-oriented instructional design models.

You understand the basic principles of Component Display Theory, the 4C/ID model, Problem Based Learning and the Cognitive Apprenticeship model.

You understand the strategy of content-oriented instructional design models.

You understand the strategy of regulation-oriented instructional models.

You can relate instructional design models to perspectives on learning and instruction.

Programme of Module 5

In this module, we first refresh the distinction between the behaviorist, cognitivist and constructivist perspective on learning and instruction.
