But also with modern scholars who are active researchers within ICO. Your teacher is Jos Beishuizen, professor emeritus of higher education at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. His talking head (see below) will guide you through of modules of this course.

The course has been made up of 8 modules:

1. Perspectives on Learning and Instruction

2. Learning and Transfer

3. Knowledge and Memory

4. Metacognition and Self-Regulation

5. Learning and Instruction

6. Motivate and Engagement

7. Learning as a Social Process

8. Multimedia Learning

Each module is made up of a number of units and an assignment. The units are short lectures (video clips) with a presentation and an accompanying oral explanation by the teacher. You simply watch the video as if you were attending a lecture.

The module ends with an assignment, usually made up of a couple of questions related to the lectures in which you have to compare and contrast concepts or theoretical perspectives which have been presented. Two feedback meetings will be organized, in which you will provide feedback on each other’s completed assignments. This feedback will be prepared by fellow course participants and by a senior ICO staff member who moderates the meeting. Moreover, participants will discuss the assignments, together with the moderator. Providing feedback and sharing ideas are meant to contribute to the understanding of the course content. More information on how to prepare for the feedback meetings can be found here.

Please feel free to start the course by opening de Modules List.

Modules List

Your teacher, Jos Beishuizen

Dear attendants, Welcome to the course Learning and Instruction: Basics and Beyond. In this course on the principles of learning and instruction you will meet with old scholars like Plato and Aristotle, depicted in Raphael’s fresco The School of Athens (see Figure 1).
